Have Good Laugh at Cartoon Series

The folks at the film department of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art are putting on an ambitious series honoring the best in cartooning.

“Enchanted Drawing--The Hollywood Animated Film” continues today and the next two weekends with five two-hour programs of the non-stop cartoon zaniness of Woody Woodpecker, Bugs Bunny, Tom and Jerry, Mr. Magoo and many, many more.

Today’s program, a retrospective of the best of MGM animation from 1938 to 1965, begins at 10:15 a.m., with an encore at 8 p.m. After a few introductory remarks by Ronald Haver, the head of LACMA’s film department, families can sit back and have a good giggle at “Red Hot Riding Hood,” “Puss Gets the Boot,” “What’s Buzzin’, Buzzard?,” “Bosko in Baghdad” and a dozen or so more.

The series continues Friday at 1 p.m. and 8 p.m. with a tribute to four master animators: Ub Werks, George Pal, Walter Lantz and Paul Terry. The Dec. 30 program at 10:15 a.m. and 8 p.m. features Warner Bros. cartoons from 1942 to 1958, including Daffy Duck and Bugs Bunny. On Jan. 5 at 1 p.m. and 8 p.m., Mr. Magoo and Gerald McBoing-Boing take center screen in a salute to UPA Studios.

Tickets are $6.50 for adults, $3.50 for students and children. All programs take place in the museum’s Leo S. Bing Theater--a nice, spacious theater but (parents may want to know this in advance) no popcorn counter. Information: (213) 857-6010.
