‘Critics Say SAT Can Be Useful but Is Overrated’
Your recent “Report Card on Orange County High Schools” (Dec. 10) was a glaring reminder that we are missing the boat with our youth. Coming on the heels of the death of the newborn in a Garden Grove high school, your “report card” makes it very clear what our priorities are--SAT scores.
Isn’t it time that we as a society begin to address the overall, real needs of our kids? Why do we continue to overlook the teaching of basic life skills, health care and other crucial issues which so glaringly confront our youth?
The fact that SAT scores are on the increase in some high schools is nice, but many of these kids will not live to realize the results if we don’t start acting now. With the numbers of homeless teen-agers on the rise, the number of pregnant teens increasing daily, and gangs and drugs infecting all neighborhoods, somehow SAT scores don’t quite seem like a countywide priority.
