TIMES GARDEN EDITOR

Finding a landscape architect is not easy but a new directory at least gets you started by listing all of the registered landscape architects in the world.

“The 1989 World Directory of Landscape Architects” contains the names, addresses and phone numbers of about 23,000 firms and individuals in more than 90 countries, plus a listing of the many academic institutions that offer landscape architecture programs.

Edited by Southern California landscape architect Donald M. Roberts, it is available for $24.95 plus $2.95 shipping, from World Directory, P.O. Box 1148, Tustin, Calif. 92681.

Or encourage your library to order a copy. This should be a basic reference. “Fine Flowers by Phone,” by Barbara Brooks (Atlantic Monthly Press: $10.95) is a directory of the finest florists across the country, from which you can place a phone order for flowers.

Need to send an elegant bouquet to a friend in St. Louis? You will find two places to call there. And 41 florists to call in California. Each listing also describes the particular specialties of each florist, and the cost for a minimum order.

Bloomin’ Window Box

If you’ve thought about hanging a window box from your balcony railing, or outside a window in the European tradition but are worried whether you can build one strong enough, there is a ready-made solution. The Blumen Box is a light but sturdy polyethylene box that comes with all the gear necessary for hanging, including adjustable steel brackets that can expand to fit over a railing, or collapse to hang on a window.

The boxes measure 2 feet by 6 inches and are about 5 inches deep--just right for flowers sold in 4-inch pots--and they cost around $17. They may be found at some True Value hardware stores, or you can phone or write the manufacturer: Janco, P.O. Box 50371, Nashville, Tenn. 37205; (615) 356-1504.

Poetic Pavilions

Following last year’s successful and provocative lecture series on gardens and garden design, the Fleming Lecture Series at Pomona College will again concentrate on gardens. This year, the series is: “Lasting Landscapes: Architecture in the Garden.”

“Poetic Pavilions: Architecture in the Gardens of China and Japan” by Bruce Coats is scheduled Jan. 30. “Buildings in Gardens; Gardens in Buildings: Models for American Landscape Design” by Marc Treib is scheduled Feb. 21, and “Follies and Fabriques: The Architectural Garden as Text in 18th Century France” by Eric T. Haskell concludes the series on March 21.
