SIDON, Lebanon — Israeli forces thrust deep into Lebanon today in two successive attacks on bases of the Lebanese Communist Party, killing at least seven guerrillas and wounding 24.
Four Israeli fighter jets fired 12 air-to-ground missiles into the main headquarters of the party in the Syrian-policed village of Rmaile, 20 miles south of Beirut, security sources said.
Israel’s 16th air strike on Lebanon this year came shortly after Israeli paratroopers launched a rare ground attack on another base of the Communist Party.
The five-story concrete headquarters building, which also houses a dispensary, was partly destroyed. Rescue teams were searching for more possible victims trapped under huge piles of rubble, witnesses said.
Palestinian and Lebanese guerrillas based nearby fired anti-aircraft guns at the Israeli jets but missed.
At least five communist guerrillas, including two women, were killed and more than 20 were wounded, hospital and security sources said.
