Located amid the crowd and noise at the entrance gate to Hollywood Park, the on-track publication booth seems to do good business, with five vendors selling their picks for that day to hopeful bettors.

But did the picks by any of the five services turn a profit at the fall meeting, which ended Sunday? Over the six-week meeting, the total amount of bets suggested by each of the five sheets was $9,240. Compared to the money won by most of the publications, there was only one winner.

Two of the five did show a profit. Bob’s ended the meeting with a total payoff of $10,889.50, ahead $1,649.50. The Green Sheet’s total payoff was $9,294.80, ahead $54.80. Baedeker’s total was $7,424.60; Duke’s, $5,844.10 and Winners, $5,441.30.

The largest total amount won in any of the categories listed in the accompanying chart was Bob’s triple bets, which had a total payoff of $8,248.90. The Green Sheet had the largest payoff on one bet, a triple that won $3,902.10. This combination triple bet had a total cost of $54.

There was only one winning Pick Six by any of the publications during the 30 days of racing. Bob’s picked all six once, in the third week, but the payoff was only $122.40. That compares to the $960 needed to bet the Pick Six over the six weeks.

The Times also will chart the sheets at Santa Anita.
