Re “Merit Only” College Entry Proposal (Dec. 9) and letter by U Kyaw Win (Dec. 19): I differ with U Kyaw Win. I feel that most of the universities in California do not discriminate in their admission, especially against Asian-Americans.

I am a student at UC Irvine, and according to the figures, there are more Asian-Americans than whites at UC Irvine, and Irvine has the highest percentage of Asian-Americans of any UC campus. Yes some worthy Asian-Americans are being turned away, as Win states. However, this seems to be a result of over-enrollment of certain ethnic groups, while discriminating against whites. Hmmm . . . sounds like reverse affirmative action!

Affirmative action is needed in today’s society, but only to balance the ethnic imbalances fairly. Too much affirmative action will create an even bigger imbalance.
