Salvadoran Witness

The Times editorial “Ugly, Unholy War in Salvador,” Dec. 15, rightfully condemns soft-pedaling by the Bush Administration during the recent arrest of Jean Casolo, an American woman temporarily detained by El Salvadoran authorities.

But The Times is soft-pedaling also. It is blatantly obvious that U.S. taxpayers are supporting a brutal regime in El Salvador to the tune of over a million dollars daily. By the way, the populace of El Salvador live in dire poverty while Uncle Sam carries on in its valiant crusade against Central American “leftists.” This is a cruel waste.

The Times needs to take a stand and publish an editorial that calls for the end of all military aid to El Salvador.
