NICOSIA, Cyprus — Anti-narcotics police fought a gun battle with drug traffickers Monday in Iran’s southeastern Kerman province, killing five smugglers and wounding seven, Tehran Radio reported.
The radio said 925 pounds of drugs was seized.
By official accounts, more than 1,000 alleged drug smugglers have been hanged in Iran since the government launched an anti-narcotics crackdown in December, 1987.
