American fashion designer Patrick Kelly, whose customers included the Princess of Wales, actress Jane Seymour and singers Madonna and Grace Jones, died in a Paris hospital Monday at 37, the guild of designers announced today.

Kelly, a black from Mississippi and the only American among the elite group of haute couture designers based in the French capital, died after a long illness that prevented him from unveiling his latest ready-to-wear collection last October.

The cause of death was bone disease and a brain tumor, the guild said in a statement.

Kelly was best known for his body-hugging knit dresses decorated with big buttons and sprightly multicolored bows, all presented with a puckish sense of humor.
