CSX Corp.: The Richmond, Va.-based transportation company posted 1989 net income of $452 million, up sharply from $147 million in 1988, when a special charge reduced income by $492 million. Revenue totaled $7.7 billion, up from $7.6 billion a year ago. The company noted that “efforts to reduce operating expenses on the railroad are clearly taking effect and helped overcome challenges presented by service suspensions due to severe December weather, lower traffic volumes and substantially higher fuel costs.”
