Crowded Classes

Share

Tracy Kidder’s insightful series from Among Schoolchildren (Dec.17 to Dec 24) hopefully enlightened readers to the challenges, frustrations and concerns faced by today’s elementary classroom teachers.

The experiences of Chris Zajac, a fifth-grade teacher in Massachusetts, are much like any California teacher with one major difference. It should be noted that Zajac taught a class of 20 students, while California elementary teachers commonly instruct anywhere from 30 to 40 students at a time.

California needs to face this problem of overcrowded classrooms, which are among the largest in the nation, if teachers in our state are to make a difference in the lives of young people.
