Refried Rice: Donna Rice, femme fatale of the 1987 Gary Hart presidential campaign, has resurfaced--this time as a born-again Christian. She has, the Washington Times reported, returned to the values of her childhood, and “her friends travel in some of Washington’s most conservative circles.” Rice now lives with a female friend in Virginia and does not have a full-time job, but does charitable work and shows up at many do-good functions.

Recycling: The affluent Boston suburb of Wellesley, Mass., has stated that only live-in maids and butlers will be allowed to deposit their employers’ refuse at the local recycling-and-disposal facility. “If the maid lives in the house, she can (bring in rubbish). But if it’s a hired worker that comes there, no, she can’t,” official Pat Berdan said. The Public Works Department is cracking down on commercial dumpers who try to evade the $80-per-ton dumping fee. How does one determine which trash is truly Wellesleyan? “We hold it up to the light and if it has alligators on it, we know it’s from Wellesley,” Berdan joked. In fact, he said, experienced city personnel will note how often someone disposes of garbage. Based on an assumption that an individual produces a daily garbage output of 3 to 5 pounds, the family employee is expected to visit the dump an average of once a week.

Koch Diets: New York’s former mayor Ed Koch turned sideways yesterday and let photographrs profile his bulging belly as he promised to lose about 40 pounds by quaffing a diet drink. Koch, who weighed in at 244 pounds, said he’ll be paid to use the Ultra Slim-Fast diet program but wouldn’t give the exact fee. “In the private sector, you have to be lean and mean,” Koch told reporters. “It’s gauche to talk about money. When I was in government I used to tell you everything. Now that I’m in private life I don’t have to tell you anything.”
