Lovely in Leather

If you see Diane Keaton in the upcoming “Godfather III” and you love her leather coats, you might check the Prada store in Beverly Hills to find out more about them. Judy Brand Leaf, owner of the new shop, says that the movie’s costume designer, Milena Canonero, purchased two overcoats at Prada in Milan--one brown, one camel--for Keaton to wear on screen.

For the Daddy-to-Be

The first men’s maternity wardrobe is being designed on the set of Fox Television’s “Alien Nation.” In early February, alien Susan Francisco, played by actress Michele Scarabelli, will pass the fetal “pod” along to her husband, played by Eric Pierpoint, for the duration of the alien gestation period. Costume designer Brienne Glyttov initially considered enlarging Pierpoint’s suits to accommodate his tumescent tummy but has decided on full shirts with pleated fronts for the obvious pregnant look so popular in maternity wardrobes. Scarabelli was more fortunate in her maternity clothing. During her part of the pregnancy, she wore a blue and white kimono-like dress she found at Cavalli’s in Beverly Center. Pierpoint’s pregnancy and the baby alien’s birth will be aired Monday, Feb. 12.

Up and Coming

As the north La Brea area kicks into gear as one of the up-and-coming chic retail spots about town, a trendy new hair salon will be part of the scene. It’s called JADDS, and Shuji Kida, former international artistic director at Vidal Sassoon in Beverly Hills, has just opened it. The full-service salon and teaching academy fairly shouts ultramodern industrial, with gray concrete floors and walls, concrete and birch stations of irregular shapes and exposed ceilings of insulation and silver paper. There are rooms for facials and body contouring, as well as classrooms where seminars will be held to train stylists flying in from Japan. And in the cafe, where herbal tea is served, one wall is devoted to a simple thing of beauty--a flower arrangement. “Now that’s Japanese,” says Kida.
