Go, Laker Girls!

Eleven years after TV gave us “Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders” (1979)--which came through a big ratings winner--we’re going to be privy to the trials and tribulations of . . . the Laker Girls!

The leggy performers who entertain in form-fitting outfits during Laker game timeouts and halftimes will be the focus of a two-hour TV movie set to shoot for CBS later this month. A network rep insisted that “Laker Girls” will stress “social awareness,” with a subplot involving a would-be Laker Girl who dreams of using her talents to teach inner-city kids to dance.

“This will not be T&A;,” declared producer Renee Valente. “And it won’t be sleazy. It will be entertainment, yes, but underneath that entertainment will be the answer to the question people ask, ‘Why do you want to be a Laker girl?’ ”

To help explore that provocative question, exec producer/writer Robert Hamilton will look into the lives of a group of would-be Laker Girls, including one from a wealthy family who’s determined to make it on her own as a dancer, and another who, sadly, won’t have what it takes to be a Lakerette.

A real-life Laker Girl is a consultant, and other genuine Laker Girls--and Lakers--will have roles.

The producers tried to hire the most famous of former Laker Girls--Paula Abdul. But “she was just too busy,” said Valente.
