WEST COAST CONFERENCE ROUNDUP : St. Mary’s Hits From Far Out, Beats USF, 73-68

James Dailey scored 17 points and St. Mary’s made 10 three-point field goals Saturday night in a 73-68 victory over San Francisco in a West Coast Conference opener at Moraga, Calif.

Also leading St. Mary’s (4-9) were guards Mike Vontoure and John Levitt and forward Ted Bull, who each scored 14 points. USF (4-9) was led by Joel DeBortoli and Scott McWhorter, each with 14.

San Diego 96, Santa Clara 71--John Jerome scored 25 points for the Toreros at San Diego.

Jerome’s turnaround jump shot with eight minutes left in the first half gave USD a 26-24 lead and the Toreros never trailed thereafter.

Kelvin Woods scored 19, Pat Holbert and Wayman Strickland with 12 each for San Diego.

Ron Reis, a 7-foot-1 sophomore center, scored 21 for Santa Clara.
