HANDMADE : Flying Colors

BRAVO FOR A KITE that is strong enough to withstand Southern California’s strong winds. Sturdy Windancer Kites are made of brightly colored nylon fabric with appliqued designs. Not only are they made for frequent flights, but they are decorative enough to hang around the house.

Dan and Linda West of Montclair have a design for just about everyone--a coyote howling at the moon, a carousel, a dolphin, hot-air balloons, flamingos, cats, musical notes and irises, to name a few. They also offer a variety of shapes and sizes, from a delta design that sells for $12 to a 24-foot dragon for $30. The delta needs only light, 6-mile-an-hour winds to stay aloft, while the box kite is heavier and requires at least 12-mile-an-hour winds. Another way to measure the breeze is with a windsock made of the same material and in similar designs. Windsocks are available in 24-inch, 42-inch and 54-inch sizes. With price tags that range from $10 to $25, they brighten a balcony without destroying a wallet.

The Wests show their wares at many area crafts fairs and will fill mail orders.
