P. M. BRIEFING : Taiwan Market Hits New High
Taiwan’s irrepressible stock market bounded to a record high today, living up to its reputation for astronomical gains by rising 12.9% in the first two weeks of 1990 alone.
Taipei brokerage houses were crowded with excited small investors, as mothers with babies, taxi drivers on break and elderly couples all craned for a glimpse of the rising numbers on the computer stock board.
“Last week I was a bit nervous, but not anymore,” said Ann Lin, a well-dressed young office worker.
The index shot up 308.44 points to end at 10,867.64--a stunning 1,243.46 point gain over the market’s 9,624.18 opening on Jan. 4, the first trading day of the year.
The previous record was 10,773.11 on Sept. 25.
