Norman Pond has resigned as president and a director of Varian Associates Inc. to pursue other business interests. Pond, 51, joined Varian, a high-technology company in Palo Alto, in 1984 from Teledyne Corp. Richard Levy, senior vice president, has been appointed president of the semiconductor equipment group. Tim Guertin, general manager of the radiation division, was named acting president of the medical products group, which Levy had headed. Pond’s resignation will not affect the search for a new chief executive to replace Thomas Sege, who plans to retire this year.
