IRVINE : Builder Sought for Jamboree Road Link

Share

Wanted: Builder for a 1 1/2-mile roadway linking Irvine and Tustin. Must start as soon as possible. Cost open. Bids due by 10 a.m., Feb. 20.

When the city of Tustin collects those bids and awards a contract, it will put an end to a struggle of more than 10 years to link two sections of Jamboree Road. The new link, which will cut through Marine Corps land at the Tustin helicopter base, has always been a part of Irvine’s general plan, City Manager Paul Brady Jr. said.

Negotiations have included the city of Irvine paying $1 million for relocating Marine facilities from Tustin to Camp Pendleton and an exchange of property between the Marines and the Irvine Co. The cities of Irvine and Tustin and the Irvine Co. will share the costs of the project.

Sam Altowaiji, associate civil engineer for Tustin, estimated the cost of building the segment at more than $15 million.

The roadway, with three lanes in each direction, will be between Barranca Parkway and Irvine Center Drive, with raised crossings at Warner Avenue and Moffett Drive, he said.

Plans call for another segment of Jamboree to continue to the Eastern Transportation Corridor.

The project will take an estimated 360 working days to complete, with a projected finish by the end of 1991, Altowaiji said.

Tustin will award the contract and Irvine will oversee the project, he said.
