Soviets Make Large Wheat Purchase: The Soviet Union bought 498,500 metric tons of U.S. wheat at subsidized prices, pushing its purchases of American wheat last week to 1 million tons, the Agriculture Department said. The latest purchase, the equivalent of 18.29 million bushels, was worth about $72.7 million, based on Chicago prices. In the past two weeks, the Kremlin has bought 2 million tons of U.S. wheat.
