Actor-strongman Arnold Schwarzenegger came to the White House today and emerged in a new role: chairman of the President’s Council on Physical Fitness and Sports.

The broad-shouldered Austrian-born performer, after getting marching orders from President Bush in the Oval Office, said his aim is to get all Americans, from the very young to the very old, to exercise regularly.

“President Bush is very much committed not only to have this a kinder and gentler nation, but also a very fit nation,” Schwarzenegger said.

The one-time Mr. Universe said of the 65-year-old President: “He’s 100% behind physical fitness. . . . He’s in tremendous shape himself.”

Schwarzenegger, 42, who parlayed his body-building skills into a Hollywood career, has starred in such films as “The Terminator” and “Conan the Barbarian.” He made numerous appearances for Bush in 1988 at campaign rallies, where Bush delighted in introducing him as “Conan the Republican.”
