NATION IN BRIEF : NATIONWIDE : Double Education Budget, U.S. Urged
The federal education budget should be doubled to allow disadvantaged children and adults to participate in proven programs that “open doors to the American dream,” a coalition of education groups and a California congressman urged in separate statements. Head Start for low-income preschoolers and Chapter One for disadvantaged youngsters were among the programs lauded by Rep. Augustus F. Hawkins (D-Los Angeles), chairman of the House Education and Labor Committee, and the Committee for Education Funding, a coalition of 100 education groups.
