Hungarian Premier Miklos Nemeth said today that the Soviet Union has agreed to withdraw all its armed forces stationed in Hungary.

Nemeth told Parliament that he and Soviet Premier Nikolai I. Ryzhkov agreed that there is no political or military reason for their continued presence, and that talks on a timetable for withdrawal will be held shortly in Budapest.

The Soviet Union has had more than 50,000 troops stationed in Hungary since Soviet tanks quashed the 1956 Hungarian uprising.

“The strategic and military geographic position of Hungary makes it possible to withdraw Soviet troops from Hungary fully and without any risk within the shortest time,” Nemeth said.

Hungary does not border on any member of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization.
