Scores Arrested in Protests Against U.S. Policy in El Salvador
More than 260 people were arrested Tuesday as hundreds of protesters in San Francisco, Washington, D.C., and the Seattle area demonstrated against U.S. policy in El Salvador, hoping to make the issue a national priority as Congress returns to work.
In San Francisco, 136 people were arrested and traffic was snarled for hours as more than 500 demonstrators blocked the entrances to the Federal Building. Most were cited for unlawful assembly, Police Chief Frank Jordan said.
In Seattle, 200 demonstrators surrounded the Jackson Federal Building and blocked downtown traffic during the morning rush hour. Eighty-five people were arrested for blocking traffic or blocking entrance to the building.
In Bellingham, Wash., about 100 miles north of Seattle, nine demonstrators were arrested.
In Washington, D.C., 37 people were arrested, including actor Martin Sheen.
