Freeze on Awarding of Military Building Contracts Ordered
Secretary of Defense Dick Cheney, in another belt-tightening measure, has ordered a three-month freeze on awarding new military construction contracts, it was announced today.
“This moratorium will permit the department to further exercise careful stewardship of taxpayer funds devoted to military construction, in light of the coming changes in the force structure and disposition of the U.S. armed forces,” Cheney said in a statement released at the Pentagon.
The moratorium, which goes into effect immediately and will last until April 30, applies to new military construction contracts, including those for architectural and engineering design services.
The Pentagon’s fiscal 1990 military construction budget as approved by Congress amounted to about $8.5 billion.
