SHORT TAKES : Jesse Jackson Talk Show on Line
Jesse Jackson’s syndicated talk show is on line for next fall, and it could continue to run in most of the country even if he became a candidate for mayor of Washington, the show’s distributor says.
Jackson has given assurances that he will do the weekly one-hour TV series, “Voices of America With Jesse Jackson,” said Barry Stagg, a spokesman for Warner Bros. Domestic Television Distribution.
The series, to be produced by composer Quincy Jones and Jackson’s production company, would debut in September.
The program has been picked by 82 stations covering 60% of the national audience, Stagg said by phone Wednesday from Warner offices in Burbank.
There has been speculation that Jackson might run for mayor of Washington in the wake of the cocaine arrest of Mayor Marion Barry. Jackson has refused to confirm his political plans.
If Jackson seeks office in Washington while his show is on the air, the Federal Communications Commission’s equal time rules for opposing candidates will go into force but only in the greater Washington viewing area.
