From Times Staff and Wire Reports

The Food and Drug Administration’s warning against an American Heart Assn. food-labeling plan was criticized by a consumer group and a food company wanting to display the plan’s seal of approval on its products. The association said it will begin “Heartguide” on Monday, despite the FDA’s warning that participating companies could face enforcement action if their products are found to be mislabeled, and will stick to its plan to extend the labels to more foods. The Heartguide program puts an association “Heart Healthy” seal on approved products. The Center for Science in the Public Interest and California & Washington Co., a San Francisco-based company that markets frozen food, backed the association.
