FINANCIAL MARKETS : CURRENCY : Yen in Spotlight; Dollar Ends Mixed
The dollar finished mixed, weakening against the British pound and Japanese yen but rising against other currencies in heavy trading.
Gold prices rose. On the New York Commodity Exchange, an ounce of gold gained $4.10 an ounce to close at $420.10. Republic National Bank later quoted a bid of $420 an ounce, up $3 from Thursday.
Most of the day’s activity centered on the yen, which investors continued to buy aggressively.
In Tokyo, the dollar closed at 143.97 yen, down from 145.30 yen Thursday. Later in London, the dollar traded at 143.30 yen. In New York, the dollar closed lower still, at 142.80 yen, compared to Thursday’s 143.93 yen.
