Children Have a ‘Passport’ to Asia

Share

In “Passport to Asia,” the newly opened exhibit at the Children’s Museum of La Habra, youngsters have an opportunity to learn about life in Japan, China and Vietnam. The emphasis here is on touching, doing, making--even wearing.

A dress-up area has been set aside with plenty of kimonos, tabis (stockings), obis (sashes worn on kimonos) and other Japanese, Chinese and Vietnamese garments for visitors to try on and then parade in front of the mirror. In the chopsticks workshop, youngsters can demonstrate their dexterity by picking up cotton balls from rice bowls. The ongoing workshop is held on a drop-in basis, free with museum admission.

In another ongoing workshop, visitors can learn how to make simple origami figures (sailboats, cranes) to take home. A portion of a Japanese house has been set up for young visitors. Toys and schoolbooks to give a feeling of everyday life for Asian children.
