TIMES INDOOR GAMES : An International Field Is Set for Meet

Athletes from 12 nations are geared up to start the 1990s in record-breaking style Friday, Feb. 16, in the 31st annual Times/Eagle Indoor GAmes at the Great Western Forum.

And--although the field is far from being filled--hot events to date loom as the Mobil 1000 Meters, Times Mile and Eagle 3000 Meters (men) and the women’s 400 meters, 800 meters and mile run.

Ocky Clark, the little-known athlete who holds the American record at 1000 meters, will compete in his specialty against Brazil’s Jose Luis Barbosa and Americans John Marshall and Stanley Redwine.

Ireland’s great Eamonn Coghlan will battle a tough 3000 meter field that includes fellow Irishman Ray Flynn, New Zealand legend John Walker and American stars Steve Scott, Doug Padilla and Brian Abshire.

The mile matches Great Britain’s Peter Elliott against another great Irish miler, Marcus O’Sullivan, and fast--rising American star Joe Falcon.

The women’s 800 meters matches two world--class performers in Romania’s Doina Melinte and Delisa Walton--Floyd of the U.S. Diane Dixon, Lillie Leatherwood and Sandra Farmer--Patrick face off in a hot 400 meter event.

Romanian star Paula Ivan will put her world record on the line against the likes of American Diana Richburg and Canada’s Debbie Bowker.

Other superb athletes entered in the 31st annual Times/Eagle Indoor Games include: Jackie Joyner--Kersee (60m hurdles); David Patrick (500 meters); Kory Tarpenning (pole vault); Jim Doehring (shot put); Greg Foster (60m hurdles) and women’s sprint star Dawn Sowell.
