Japanese Car Makers

Your editorial (“Shaking Up the Giant,” Jan.. 20) is correct when you said “But the Japanese challenge, despite its devastation of the U.S. industry, has had the unintended effect of finally waking the sleeping giant in Detroit.”

How well I remember when we got caught with our pants down at Pearl Harbor and we practically had our backs to the wall; we rose to the occasion to do the job that resulted in ultimate victory.

And now the auto makers of Detroit have their backs to the wall. It is time they got off their duffs, quit whining and did something about it. I am reminded of a World War II song, “We Did It Before and We Can Do It Again.”
