Jet Makes Emergency Landing in Chicago
An American Airlines jet carrying 117 passengers and a crew of nine from Los Angeles to Boston made an emergency landing at O’Hare International Airport in Chicago after the pilot detected smoke, officials said Monday.
The passengers were evacuated on emergency slides after the wide-body Boeing 767 landed safely, and one passenger was slightly injured leaving the plane, the Federal Aviation Administration said.
An FAA spokesman said Flight 94 was 35 miles southwest of Madison, Wis., when the pilot detected smoke and declared an emergency. After landing at O’Hare, a smell like that from an electrical fire was detected in the cockpit, but no fire was found.
On Sunday, an LA-bound American DC-10 with 239 passengers was forced to land at Phoenix International Airport when smoke began billowing into the cabin.
Flight 79 from Dallas to Los Angeles made the emergency landing at 8:37 p.m. MST Sunday after the pilot shut down the center engine of the tri-engine plane. No one was hurt and passengers switched planes, landing in Los Angeles about 90 minutes late, an official said.
