Though many James Bond buffs weren’t too crazy about “Licence to Kill,” starring their cool, dapper hero as an avenger, it’s doing great in the rental market--soaring to No. 3 on the Billboard chart in just three weeks. It grossed $33 million in theaters but that was less than expected. As often happens, when a film transfers to home video, many who ignored the Bond adventure in movie houses are now renting it. Spike Lee’s “Do the Right Thing” is off to a fast start. After two weeks, it’s already No. 10 on the rental chart. “Renegades,” the cop movie starring Lou Diamond Phillips and Kiefer Sutherland, is doing so-so rental business, climbing two rungs to No. 17. Sluggish in the rental market: “Dead Calm,” starring Sam Neill, in 29th place and one notch lower, “Listen to Me,” with Jami Gertz.

* “A Nightmare on Elm Street 5,” which racked up a respectable $22 million at the box office and features teen favorite Freddy Krueger, was supposed to be a big rental hit--but it’s just done modest business so far. It never made the Top 10 and started sliding down the chart shortly after its debut in early January. This week it dropped four notches to No. 20.
