Consumer Confidence Declines: The Conference Board said its consumer confidence index tumbled to 105.1 in January from 113 in December and 115.8 in January, 1989. The January reading was the lowest since the index registered 100.8 in November, 1987, the month after the stock market crash. A monthly survey of 5,000 households throughout the country showed that 18.5% of all those responding expressed the view that business conditions were bad, a slightly larger percentage than in December. Only about one in four respondents believed that jobs were “plentiful.”
