Betting Initiative Is Put on Hold

After studying the odds, Assemblyman Richard E. Floyd has decided to put off his proposed sports betting initiative until 1992.

The Carson Democrat had planned to qualify an initiative for the November ballot that would allow Californians to bet on all professional and college sports.

But his office said this week that the measure is being shelved due to strong opposition from racehorse owners, the difficulty of gathering enough voter signatures in time, and concern that a profusion of other initiatives this year may make voters hostile to ballot questions.

A Floyd aide said the assemblyman plans to place his measure on the June, 1992, ballot.
