WORLD IN BRIEF : ISRAEL : Rabin Temporarily Halts Expulsions

Defense Minister Yitzhak Rabin ordered a temporary halt to the expulsion of Palestinians living in the occupied territories without residency permits. The announcement came a day after the U.S. State Department expressed concern about the practice. Palestinian activists said the expulsions were part of a long-term strategy to force Palestinians out of the West Bank and the Gaza Strip. Many of those expelled have been visitors who married legal residents.
