Santa Monica : Theater Proposal Canceled

Share

The City Council voted this week to remove a Spanish-language theater from a planned development of a city-owned parking lot on 2nd Street in downtown Santa Monica.

After city staff members said the theater would add $660,000 to the construction cost of the mixed-use project, the council voted 4 to 2 to replace it with a Latino cultural center. The development will also include residential units and ground-floor commercial space.

In its recommendation, the city staff noted that removing the theater would permit the city to increase the number of residential units in the development from 28 to 44.

Some residents had lobbied vigorously for a Spanish-language theater to replace the privately owned Cine Latino, which operated for many years on 3rd Street before closing in 1987.
