McGraw-Hill Inc.: The New York publishing company posted 1989 earnings of $47.8 million, down sharply from $185.5 million the previous year. The company said it took an unusual charge of $152 million due to writedowns associated with non-performing assets and the shutdown of General Books and reserves for severance payments for staff reductions of more than 1,000 full-time positions. Revenue for 1989 increased 6.9% to $1.8 billion.
