School Camp-Out

Parents, who began camping out Tuesday at Corona’s Lincoln Alternative School hoping to capture one of the coveted openings for their children, saw their efforts pay off Thursday as registration started.

Lincoln’s approach to educating kindergartners through sixth-graders has made the school in Riverside County a runaway success. It stresses a back-to-basics curriculum with heavy emphasis on what school officials call “traditional values.”

Along with reading the classics and conducting research projects, Lincoln’s 920 students practice penmanship, memorization, patriotism and a respect for authority, said Cathy Inigarida of the school’s office staff.

“The most important element of Lincoln’s program is parent involvement,” said Inigarida. “Parents are more than happy to lend a hand here to help us out. The PTA president stayed here all night assisting those people who were camping out.”

Corona police said about 25 people were sleeping in alcoves at the school before Thursday’s registration. Another 75 spent the night sleeping in chairs, tents and campers at the school.
