Nation IN BRIEF : Alabama : Cutter Comes Home From Chase at Sea
A Coast Guard cutter that chased and fired on a Cuban-operated freighter returned to port in Mobile, Ala., and the skipper, Lt. Todd Gentile, said he was too cautious in failing to stop the ship for a drug inspection. The Chincoteague tailed the 250-foot Hermann for 335 miles before it escaped into Mexican waters. The Coast Guard released a videotape of the chase showing the Chincoteague firing on the Hermann’s rudder and propeller area. The crew also used hoses to shoot water in an attempt to flood the Hermann’s engine.
