GARDEN GROVE : High School Bingo Provision Approved

Share

The City Council approved an amendment to the city bingo ordinance to allow the games at Garden Grove high schools.

The council on Monday night voted, 4 to 1, with Mayor W.E. (Walt) Donovan dissenting.

Just three bingo sessions are now held regularly in Garden Grove. The sessions are sponsored by the Boys Club, the Jewish Community Center and the Elks Lodge.

If the council gives final approval to the new ordinance Feb. 26, it would become effective March 22. Holding bingo games at the high schools would still have to be authorized by the Garden Grove Unified School District’s board members.

Sports and music booster organizations argued for the change, saying the money raised with the games would allow athletic and band programs to compete more successfully with schools in other districts that permit bingo.

However, the new ordinance was criticized by Elizabeth Sharron, a retired nurse.

“A bad example is worse than no example at all,” Sharron said. “All this does is teach our young people that they can get something without working for it.”
