SOVIET BLOC IN TRANSITION : Jewish Groups of 2 Germanys Meet

The Jewish councils of both East and West Germany met for the first time Tuesday to discuss the implications of moves toward German unity and ways to ensure the cohesion of their communities.

The Central Council of Jews in (West) Germany and the Assn. of Jewish Communities in the GDR (East Germany) met in West Berlin, their first formal conference since the two German states were founded in 1949.

West Germany has about 30,000 Jews in its 61 million population. There are about 4,000 East German Jews in a population of 16 million.
