U.S. Threatens to Walk From Trade Talks: Trade Representative Carla Anderson Hills told the Senate Finance Committee that the United States would rather walk away from global trade talks now under way in Geneva than accept a deal not in its best interests. Hills stressed the importance she placed on the current four-year Uruguay round of GATT talks, due to end in December. But she also cautioned: “I have made it clear to my counterparts that I would rather walk away from the table than bring home a package that is not in America’s best interest.” Hills said progress was being made in several key areas in talks under the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade, which sets the rules for about 80% of all world trade.
