NATION IN BRIEF : NEW YORK : $10-Million Lawsuit Filed in Exxon Spill
New York City sued Exxon Corp. for $10 million plus damages, charging the energy giant with fraud and negligence in the pipeline spill of about 567,000 gallons of heating oil off Staten Island. New Jersey and Elizabeth, N.J., already have sued Exxon because of the spill Jan. 1-2 in Arthur Kill, a waterway separating New Jersey and New York’s Staten Island. Mayor David N. Dinkins said the city was forced to act because the oil company has refused to move voluntarily to correct the environmental damage to the waterway and neighboring wetlands.
