Cardinal Jozef Glemp, leader of Poland’s Roman Catholic Church, was removed from intensive care Wednesday, a week after emergency surgery to stop massive internal bleeding.

The condition of the 61-year-old primate improved sufficiently to allow him to be moved to a normal surgical floor in the Warsaw hospital, where he has been since undergoing surgery Jan. 30 and 31, doctors and the church announced in a communique.

Polish newspapers earlier said Glemp suffered cardiac shock from bleeding related to a perforated ulcer.

The primate received separate visits Wednesday from President Wojciech Jaruzelski and Prime Minister Tadeusz Mazowiecki, the official PAP news agency said.

President Bush sent Glemp a telegram wishing him a speedy recovery, PAP said.
