COUNTYWIDE : School District Faces Budget Shortfall
The Orange Unified School District has a $1.2-million shortfall in its projected budget for this fiscal year because of declining high school enrollment.
John Perry, assistant superintendent of support services, said the district enrolled 24,709 students, 349 less than were anticipated. The district’s budget for the entire year is $100 million.
But Perry said that because teachers were not hired to accommodate those 349 students, the actual loss in state funding to the district will be about $600,000. The shortfall will come out of the district’s operating reserve fund.
“It sounds like a lot of money, but when you think about it in terms of a $100-million budget, it’s not a large amount,” Perry said.
The district’s interim financial report was presented to school board members this week.
