World IN BRIEF : EL SALVADOR : 14 Killed as Army, Rebel Forces Clash
Clashes between army and leftist rebel units in El Salvador have intensified, with 14 killed in 24 hours, the armed forces said. Three soldiers and 11 insurgents died in battles throughout the country. It was one of the highest reported daily casualty tolls since an offensive by the Farabundo Marti National Liberation Front wound down in mid-December. A fire also destroyed an arsenal in a military garrison based in Sensutepeque, 50 miles west of San Salvador, destroying stores of grenades and ammunition and injuring one person, the Red Cross said.
