SDSU Women Lose to 17th-Ranked Hawaii

San Diego State’s women’s basketball team couldn’t keep up with No. 17 Hawaii Saturday night and suffered a 88-73 loss in Honolulu.

Judy Mosley scored 33 points while pulling down 10 rebounds for Hawaii.

Julie Evans led SDSU with 26 points, Dee Dee Davis had 16 and Crystal Lee had 10.

The victory raised Hawaii’s Big West Conference record to 10-2, 19-2 overall. The Aztecs fell to 3-10 in conference play and 4-20 overall.

BASEBALL

Derek Vinyard went two for four including a two-RBI double in a four-run second inning for San Diego State as the Aztecs routed Pacific, 10-2.

Steve Boucher also went two for four, batted in a run and scored two more as the Aztecs improved to 5-1. Pacific fell to 1-5.

In a 7-3 victory, visiting St. Mary’s sent 10 men to the plate in the third inning and erased a 2-1 deficit with five runs. Craig Billeci had a run-scoring double in the inning and Gil Orta, Lee Dongallo and Chris Koeper all had run-scoring singles. Koeper finished with three hits and two RBIs.

USD fell to 3-2, 1-2 in West Coast Conference play and St. Mary’s improved to 3-4, 2-1.

SOFTBALL

Nora Flores pitched a three-hitter and picked up her first victory of the season, 2-1 against UC Santa Barbara, in the second game of a double-header to give host U.S. International a split.

Flores was also involved in both USIU runs. She scored the first run in the fifth after doubling. In the seventh, she singled and got caught in a run down allowing pinch-runner Chelcee Clifton to score from second.

UCSB (5-1) took the first game, 3-2, behind former Vista High pitcher Kelli Schott. USIU evened its record at 3-3.

MEN’S TENNIS

Mike Rintala, the No. 10 player for UC San Diego, defeated Francois Monnar, UCSD’s No. 1 singles player, to win the Triton/Avia Spring Tennis tournament at UCSD.

To get to the finals, Rintala also had to beat Chris Belloli, UCSD’s No. 3 player in the quarterfinals and Sig Huber, the school’s No. 2 player in the semis.

WOMEN’S TENNIS

U.S. International (5-4) lost only 10 games to Long Beach State in six singles matches and three doubles matches en route to a 9-0 sweep. USIU (5-4) will play host to San Diego at 1:30 p.m. today.
