From Times Staff and Wire Service Reports

A multi-vehicle pileup causing a small chemical spill on the Costa Mesa Freeway and a separate incident involving an overturned truck on the Santa Ana Freeway snarled Orange County commuter traffic this morning for more than an hour, authorities said.

No serious injuries were reported in the accidents, which occurred within 15 minutes and five miles of each other, the California Highway Patrol said.

A CHP dispatcher said the 7:30 a.m. chemical spill involved small amounts of diesel fuel, swimming pool chlorine and the solvent toluene, which were mopped up by California Department of Transportation crews. The spill was caused by a six-car rear-end collision on the southbound Costa Mesa Freeway near Katella Avenue, the CHP said.

Adding to traffic woes, a truck with a flatbed trailer had overturned at 7:15 a.m. on the southbound Santa Ana Freeway, near its junction with the southbound Costa Mesa Freeway. No other vehicles were involved, the CHP said.

At least one person was injured in the Costa Mesa Freeway accident, an Orange Fire Department spokesperson said.
