Alhambra : Child-Care Funds Sought

Child-care facilities should be eligible for state funding through a program designed to set aside money for low- and moderate-income housing, City Council members said Tuesday as they directed staff to lobby state legislators.
Under current law, a redevelopment agency is required to set aside 20% of its annual tax increment revenue for the development of low- and moderate-income housing. At a meeting Tuesday, Councilman Michael Blanco urged that part of the set-aside money be used for child-care facilities. By a unanimous vote, the board told its staff to contact state legislators and push for such a change.
“Redevelopment is for the creation of jobs,” Councilwoman Mary Louise Bunker said. “When you create jobs, you create a need for child care.”
